Former US President Joe Biden has an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Treatment is now underway. The 82-year-old says he's keeping his spirits up.
Nearly two weeks after revealing that he has prostate cancer, former US President Joe Biden expressed confidence about his recovery. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a public appearance in his home state of Delaware, Biden said, "We're all optimistic." He has begun treatment. "The expectation is that we can beat this," the 82-year-old said of his cancer.
Biden said he currently has to take "a pill," but didn't provide details about his treatment. His office had announced the illness on May 18. It was a more aggressive and advanced, but treatable form of the disease, he said at the time.
Biden left office in January – the oldest president in US history to date. He had originally planned to run again for the Democrats in the 2024 election. But in the election year, there were growing doubts about his physical and mental health. Discussions about his condition ultimately prompted Biden to withdraw from the race. His Vice President, Kamala Harris, ran instead, but she lost the election to Donald Trump.
